Eglise Notre-Dame-De-La-Paix set to be demolished - Verdun

Eglise Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix 03

The Notre-Dame-De-La-Paix church in Verdun is set to be demolished to make way for an intermediate resource center, according to this announcement at the city's website: link. The beautiful church has been abandoned for some time now. It was inaugurated with a midnight mass on 24 December 1950. This church replaced an older church with the same name (see second to last photo). It's location is sorta of an issue: it's isolated by LaSalle boul, Ethel street, Strathmore street and Gertrude street. It had two addresses: on Ethel and Strathmore. This is sad for several reasons which I won't go into but Verdun has probably more churches per square kilometer than any other borough on the island. And not just ordinary churches but BIG churches. 10 years or so ago I wanted to make a book on the churches of Verdun because many of them are (were) quite impressive including the St John the Divine church (link) on Moffat street which was converted into condos. I abandoned the book project after St John the Divine was converted into condos.

-----------

Eglise St-Anselme 01

Photos of the old St-Anselme church on rue De Rouen (corner Hogan) in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve district. The church housed as a daycare center, a community center and a second-hand clothes shop when it burned down on September 13 2011. I don't know when they stopped the religious ceremonies there.

L'église abritait une garderie, un centre communautaire et une friperie quand un incendie a ravager la structure le 13 Septembre 2011. Je ne sais pas quand ils ont arrêté les cérémonies religieuses.

I uploaded this short video overview of the old St-Anselme church on rue De Rouen (corner Hogan) in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve district. The place was gutted by a fire on September 13 2011 and has been neglected since then. I'll upload more photos and info on this site soon.

1 Year later on De Lorimier - Montréal (Sainte-Marie)

De Lorimier panoramic

I took the two photos directly below (there's more at the original post here) back in March of 2012, which is on De Lorimier (at the corner of the small street of Laforce). When I went back there last week (above and three last photos) I was shocked to see that the digging they started well over a year ago hasn't changed much since then. Some projects pop up seemingly overnight while this one is super slow to take shape. Something must have happened for it to have stalled like this.

De Lorimier & Disraeli - Montréal (Sainte-Marie)

Disraeli 1

The building on the corner of De Lorimier and Disraeli in Sainte-Marie neighborhood has been demolished. The entire area is seemingly being replaced by new condo projects. It's something to see. I only took photos from this angle, on Disraeli, forgetting to take some from De Lorimier.

This is a Google Streetview screenshot of the corner of De Lorimier and Disraeli. You can see new condo projects on the left and right sides. It was a matter of time before this corner was demolished.

Parthenais, between De Maisonneuve & Ste-Catherine - Montréal (Sainte-Marie)

De Maisonneuve Parthenais 1

New condo project on Parthenais, between De Maisonneuve and Ste-Catherine in the Sainte-Marie district in Montreal. The land was empty there for some time. But the question is: with big condo projects popping up everywhere in this area and with the north east sides of Parthenais and De Maisonneuve, on both corners, now occupied with new condo projects how long will it be before the Mobico building and the surrounding area will be razed to the ground for new condos? I've seen this pattern many times around Montréal, including the corner of Notre Dame and De La Montagne (as seen here). The old always loses to the new (and not so beautiful...that new condo building is ugly!). Great view of the bridge though.
